Power outage in Paros and interconnected islands

On Tuesday 8 September, at 5am, Paros high and medium voltage substation failed, which caused a power outage in Paros and all interconnected islands including, Naxos, Ios, Sikinos, Folegandros Antiparos, Heraklion, Schinoussa and Koufonissi.

The Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator (HEDNO) immediately mobilised its technical staff after the power outage. Most of the islands were re-electrified by 6:30 am but it took a few more hours to re-electrify all the islands.

The new submarine cables that will connect Paros with Naxos, and Naxos with Mykonos have been laid already and test electrification has been successfully carried out. The cables will be fully commissioned after the construction of Naxos substation, which is the only remaining step in Cyclades Phase B completion. The €70 million Cyclades phase B also includes the upgrade of the existing cable interconnections of Livadi (Evia) -Andros and Andros-Tinos.
