PrysmianPrysmian Group has been awarded a new contract, worth €125 million, for an interconnection between the island of Crete and mainland Greece (Peloponnese region).

The project was awarded by IPTO (Independent Power Transmission Operator), which operates the transmission system for Greece’s power grid. The contract will be finalised within 2018, following the customary approvals from the authorities involved.

The project is the first submarine electricity interconnection between the Greek island and the mainland and involves the design, supply, installation and commissioning of an HVAC (High Voltage Alternating Current) cable system composed of 150 kV three-core cables with XLPE insulation and double-wire armouring. The route extends to 135 km, reaching depth of installation up to 950 metres.

The submarine cables will be produced by Prysmian at its facility in Arco Felice (Naples) and will be installed using subsea cable installation vessel Giulio Verne. Delivery and commissioning are scheduled for 2020.

The new contract follows a €21m agreement signed by the two companies for two interconnections between the Cyclades islands (Evia, Andros and Tinos), Greece.

The project involves the design, supply and installation, as well as the related land civil work of two turnkey High Voltage Alternating Current (HVAC) cable systems designed to transmit a power of 200 MVA and consisting of 150 kV three core cables with XLPE insulation and double wire armouring and associated fibre optic cable system along a total route of over 18 km (16,5 km submarine and 2 km land) for the interconnection between the four landfalls (Evia – Andros and Andros – Tinos).

Production of both submarine and onshore will be carried out during 2018-2019. Delivery and commissioning is scheduled for Q3 2019.
