RWE has successfully installed the first offshore turbine foundation at its 1.4 GW Sofia Offshore Wind Farm, marking the commencement of the offshore construction phase. This development represents a significant milestone in the project, which aims to generate enough green electricity by 2026 to power approximately 1.2 million UK homes.

Sven Utermohlen, CEO of RWE Offshore Wind, expressed his enthusiasm: "After 14 years of planning and preparation, this is a significant milestone for the entire RWE team. I'd like to thank everyone involved for their contribution. Building a project of this size and scale is a great opportunity to demonstrate our expertise in delivering offshore wind energy around the globe."

The Sofia project, located off the coast of the UK, will feature 100 turbines, including 44 equipped with recyclable blades. Each of these 14 MW turbines will stand 252 meters tall, with a rotor diameter of 222 metres, sweeping an area of 39,000 square metres.

The project also signifies a transformative phase for the Port of Tyne, which has undergone extensive upgrades to support the construction and operational phases of the wind farm. This underscores RWE's commitment to advancing renewable energy and contributing to the UK's green energy transition.
