RWE wins Hollandse Kust West VII

RWE has emerged victorious in a Dutch tender for subsidy-free offshore wind. Hollandse Kust West (HKW) VII is located 53 km from the Dutch coast, in the North Sea.

The company plans to develop more than 760 MW at the site, and claims that this will be enough energy to supply the equivalent of nearly one million Dutch homes. Its proposal in the tender included a solution for integrating offshore wind farms into the Netherlands’ energy grid.

According to Markus Krebber, CEO of RWE AG, the win “marks RWE’s entry into the Dutch offshore wind market, one of our key strategic growth markets in Europe.” Describing the full system integration concept as “innovative”, Krebber added that RWE has “developed a blueprint for a new generation of offshore wind farms, which can be perfectly integrated into the energy system.”

The concept for HKW VII includes combining offshore wind with electrolyser capacity for green hydrogen production as well as other flexible demand solutions such as e-boilers and battery storage. Moreover, RWE is planning to include floating solar panels alongside the offshore wind, which is claims is “a more efficient use of ocean space.”

RWE also has a bid in the current tender for HKW VI, which includes an ecological concept designed to benefit biodiversity. Results for that tender can be expected before the end of 2022.
