Aibel, a leading service company within the offshore wind industry providing engineering, construction and maintenance services, celebrated the sail away of Dogger Bank A's offshore substation (OSS) topside from the company's yard in Haugesund, Norway yesterday (16 March 2023). The OSS topside has began the journey to the UK, and installation is expected to begin Spring 2023.

Aibel was awarded the contract to supply the OSS topside in October 2019. Following this, Aibel manufactured the topside at their facility in Thailand and in June 2022 it was transported to the Company's yard in Haugesund, Norway, where the transformers and advanced converter equipment from Hitachi Energy was installed.

Dogger Bank A (1.2 GW) is the first phase of the Dogger Bank Wind Farm, a three-phase, 3.6 GW offshore wind project. The Dogger Bank A phase is expected to be fully operational later on this year. When all three phases of the Dogger Bank project are commissioned, it is expected to produce enough energy to power the equivalent of 6 million homes.

Aibel will also be manufacturing the OSS topsides for the second and third phases of the Dogger Bank project. The OSS topside for Dogger Bank B is expected Q2 2024, and Dogger Bank C's OSS topside is scheduled for delivery Q2 2025.

This news comes only days after the announcement of the O&M base opening in South Tyneside for the Dogger Bank project.
