Samsø offshore wind farm has suffered a major breakdown with turbine sevens's nacelle and blades falling into the sea. There were no people in or near the site at the time of the accident which is expected to have occurred at 9:40 am (UTC) when staff monitoring in Brande lost remote connection to the turbine.

The loss in connection prompted a service call later in the morning, which was expected to be a simple task with the re-establishment of the connection to the turbine. When the service vessel, which departed from Vesborg,  arrived at the site they realised that the error message highlighted a far greater problem.

Samsø stated that:
"The cause of the accident is currently unknown, and can only be finally determined when the mill is salvaged. The mill is considered a total loss the wings in connection with the fall has caused serious damage to the tower section. The accident is reported to the insurance company Codan, but clarification of insurance coverage must await the final accident report."

The remaining 9 turbines have temporarily been out of service since the accident and will now be inspected. Samsø said the incident has been reported to the relevant authorities.

Samsø offshore wind farm, also referred to as Paludans Flak, was put into operation Q1 2003 and has been generating electricity from 10 Siemens SWT-2.3-82 turbines. The 23MW project is jointly owned by Samso Municipality and Difko A/S and located of the coast of Denmark in the sea of Kattegat.
