Energy giant Shell has officially joined SPARTA, the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult's unique bench marking initiative aimed at optimising the performance of offshore wind projects in UK waters. SPARTA (System Performance, Availability and Reliability Trend Analysis) was established in 2015 with support from The Crown Estate. It is the world’s only joint industry run bench marking platform for offshore wind farms, providing crucial performance data for in-depth performance tracking and planning.

With Shell's participation, SPARTA now includes six of the UK’s leading offshore wind developers: ScottishPower Renewables, EDF, Equinor, RWE, Vattenfall, and Ørsted. Together, they collect data across approximately 90 key performance indicators (KPIs) from more than 1,500 active offshore wind turbines in UK waters.

Andy Macdonald, Director of Development and Operations at the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult, highlighted the significance of this collaboration: “We have forged close working relationships with our SPARTA partners and remain acutely aware of our role as initiators and trusted custodians of this highly sensitive data."
He added, “SPARTA has been designed to support improvements in the availability, reliability, and performance of offshore wind assets through accurate benchmarking and metrics. The partnership is focused on identifying and driving efficiency improvements, as well as cost and risk reduction to support enhanced innovation and investor confidence.”

This collaboration aims to bolster efficiency, reduce costs and risks, and enhance innovation and investor confidence in the offshore wind sector.
