NeuConnect marked a significant milestone today as major construction commenced in Germany for the first UK-German energy link. The groundbreaking ceremony in Wilhelmshaven was attended by prominent figures, including Germany’s Vice-Chancellor Dr. Robert Habeck, Lower Saxony’s Economic Affairs Minister Olaf Lies, and UK Minister of State for Trade Policy Greg Hands, along with over 80 guests.

NeuConnect, a £2.4 billion (€2.8 billion) project funded by global investors Meridiam, Allianz Capital Partners, Kansai Electric Power, and TEPCO, aims to connect two of Europe’s largest energy markets. The project involves building converter stations in Wilhelmshaven and on the Isle of Grain in England, connected by 725 km of land and subsea cables. This "invisible energy highway" will facilitate the flow of up to 1.4 GW of electricity, powering up to 1.5 million homes and enhancing energy security for both nations. The project is also expected to reduce carbon emissions by over 13 million tonnes of CO2 over 25 years.

Dr. Robert Habeck emphasised the importance of European cooperation in achieving energy transition goals, stating, "The first German-British interconnector will help balance renewable energy fluctuations and maintain system stability."

UK Minister Greg Hands highlighted the project's role in strengthening energy security and Anglo-German relations: "NeuConnect's £2.4 billion project will deliver electricity for millions of homes, showcasing the strength of our relationship with Germany."

NeuConnect Chair Julia Prescot added, "NeuConnect will unite our Net Zero ambitions and strengthen economic links between Germany and the UK."

With construction already underway at the UK site, NeuConnect is on track to be operational by 2028.
