Survey work will commence soon for a 3,800 km subsea cable to export solar energy from Australia to Singapore. The Sun Cable project is planned to involve a 10 GW solar farm in Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory, a 22 gigawatt hour battery storage facility and a 3,800 km transmission network to Singapore.
The Sun Cable is funded by two Australian billionaires, Atlassian co-founder Mike Cannon-Brookes and Fortescue Metals founder Andrew Forrest. It has an estimated cost of A$20 billion. The project will likely start operations in 2027.

Perth-based Guardian Geomatics will conduct a route survey for the high voltage direct current cable. Cannon-Brookes has championed the “lighthouse” project as a demonstration of how Australia can produce its own clean energy and diminish its dependence on coal and gas export revenues.

Guardian Geomatics said in a media release: "This initial survey is a major step toward an exciting, multibillion-dollar project, described as exporting ‘sunshine’ to Asia.’"

Developers claim that the
project can supply a fifth of Singapore’s power needs, helping to reduce the city-state’s reliance on natural gas imports. It also has plans to link to Indonesia.

In addition to the Sun Cable project, the company is installing a 50 MW big battery near Darwin in Australia’s Northern Territory. The facility will initially provide back-up services to the local power grid, and ultimately form part of a larger storage system to support the Australia-ASEAN Power Link project. Construction will likely start in 2021, and commissioning is expected in 2022.
