Triton Knoll makes decommissioning plans

Triton Knoll Offshore Wind Farm Ltd (TKOWFL) is consulting on the draft Decommissioning Programme for its 860MW offshore wind farm.

The draft Decommissioning Programme outlines TKOWFL’s plans for the removal of the offshore infrastructure associated with the wind farm array and export cable route after the project has reached the end of its lifecycle. The document has been produced in line with the requirements of the Development Consent Orders for the project.

Located 32km off the coast of Lincolnshire in the east of England, the
Triton Knoll wind farm is being developed by Innogy (59%), J-Power (25%) and Kansai Electric Power(16%). In 2017 the project secured a Contract for Difference with a strike price of £74.75/MWh (approx.€83.45/MWh) for 15 years.

Onshore construction works commenced in Q3 2018 with offshore construction scheduled to begin in late 2019 or early 2020. The wind farm will feature 90
V164-9.5 MW turbines with monopile foundations as well as two Offshore Transformer Modules (OTM).

Once fully operational in 2021/22 the wind farm is expected to be capable of supplying the equivalent of 800,000 UK households with renewable electricity annually.

After a lifetime of approximately 24 years, the project will be decommissioned. All the turbines will be removed via jack-up vessel. The monopiles will be cut below the seabed with the remainder of the structures left in situ, below the seabed. All cabling and cable protection will also be left in situ. The two OTMs will be removed in a single mobilisation, ideally using the same vessel as the turbines and/or foundations.

Interested parties are now invited to submit comments on the draft Decommissioning Programme by Friday 25th January, 2019 prior to its submission to the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) in February.
