ScottishPower via TwitterScottishPower has informed that part of the subsea cable for the Western Link interconnector project has come ashore in North Ayrshire, Scotland.

Installation work is being carried out by Siemens and Prysmian as main contractors for the project. Cable installation is being executed by Prysmian's dedicated cable lay vessel Giulio Verne.

The £1bn project is a joint venture between National Grid and ScottishPower Transmission and includes the installation of the 385km subsea marine cable between Ardneil Bay in North Ayrshire in Scotland to the Wirral peninsula in north west England. It will take renewable power from Scotland to homes and businesses in England and Wales.

The link will allow the electricity to bypass existing system bottlenecks, and will transmit up to 2,200MW of electricity, sufficient to meet the needs of around two million people. The project is expected to come online by the end of 2017.
