Wind heads to Ireland after lightning work on old wind farm

Its believed that two turbines were being repaired with at least one having suffered a lighning strike causing the damage. North Hoyle is one of the United Kingdoms oldest windfarms built in 2003, North Hoyle produces enough clean, green electricity each year to meet the needs of approximately 40,000 homes.

On 1 July, 2014, North Hoyle marked 10 years full and successful operation in the harsh North Wales marine environment, the first large scale offshore wind farm in the UK to do so.

The project is located 4-5 miles off the North Wales coast between Rhyl and Prestatyn and comprises 30 wind turbines, each rated at 2 megawatts. Oringinally installed were the Vestas turbine type V80-2.0 MW®



The turbines needing repair were NH24 – 053° 25.449’N 003° 25.637’W, and NH30 – 053° 25.715’N 003° 28.649’W.
The jackup vessel Wind carried out the lifting work operating 24 hours a day when the weather allowed..

JU Wind is a 55m jack up vessel operated by ZITON AS and has operated on more than 29 wind farms.
