X1 Wind completes PivotBuoy design

X1 Wind has announced that its design of the PivotBuoy floating offshore wind system has been completed and is now ready for manufacturing at DEGIMA facilities in Santander.

Following 10 months of design work, the project has now entered the manufacturing phase. Assembly and installation is planned for Autumn 2020. A part-scale platform with a Vestas V29 turbine adapted in a downwind configuration will be grid connected to PLOCAN test site in the Canary Islands.

The system combines Single Point Mooring systems (SPM) with Tension-Leg Platform systems (TLP) and a more downwind structural design. X1 stated that this enables a weight reduction in floating wind structures compared to current spar and semi-submersible systems.

The platform is designed to operate at an increased water depth, opening up sites which were previously technically or commercially inaccessible. X1 Wind stated that its technology has the potential to reduce platform weight by as much as 80 per cent and costs by 50 per cent, making floating wind competitive -- with the aim of achieving €50/MWh in commercial scale wind farms.
