X1 Wind’s PivotBuoy prototype ready for installation

X1 Wind has successfully laid the dynamic cable for PivotBuoy, which is now ready for final installation at the PLOCAN Test Site, in the Canary Islands.

Installation of the PivotBuoy prototype has been hit with delays since 2021. The unit entered the water in May 2021, yet knock on effects from the COVID-19 pandemic, a volcanic eruption in the Canaries and restrictive weather windows has significantly pushed back installation. With the trade-winds now blowing strong in the Canary Islands until mid-September, X1 Wind’s team will wait for a suitable weather window to complete the towing and hook-up of the prototype.

Once connected, the 20kV dynamic cable will feed into PLOCAN’s smartgrid, as well as transmitting data through its fibre optic connection. Compared to catenary systems, the TLP mooring system will reduce motions and loads on the cable, crucial for reducing fatigue and extending the lifetime of the component. A strong collaboration with international and local supply chain partners including Noatum Logistics, Hengtong, Trames, Ditrel Industrial, Electrimega, Partnerplast and Gateway, has been instrumental for the successful installation of the cable.
