The south-west Cumbrian Port of Barrow plays a key role in serving the offshore energy industry that has seen this region described as Britain's "energy coast". Close to the Lake District National Park, Barrow is linked to the M6 by the A590 and also has a direct connection to the national rail network. The port has 15 ha of secure open storage and is the site of BAE Systems' submarine design and manufacuring facility.
