4C Offshore Empowering Intelligence
18 Aug 2023: The current concept for the project has evolved. The Cape Winds project originally had a capacity of 495 MW in Commonwealth waters, with the possibility of the project's capacity being expanded up to 2 GW with an extension into State waters. Original plans included the project to be 5.5 km from the coast with 33-62 x 8-15 MW turbines. The current plan proposed includes removing any turbines proposed for State waters, having the wind farm located solely in Commonwealth waters 10 km from the coast, using between 70-80 x 15-20 MW turbines. It is estimated that the turbines may be spaced around 1.5 km apart, however design work is still ongoing, being subject to several years of data collection and study, before final detailed designs are completed. The Southern Oceans Zone, in which the project is expected to be located, is currently undergoing a formal consultation process. Upon the completion of this review process, the Federal Energy Minister may choose to formally Declare the Southern Oceans Zone, after which time the Cape Winds project will be able to apply for a Feasibility Licence. If successful in achieving a Feasibility Licence, the project will have a 7 year term to complete in-depth environmental, technical, procurement and financial work to develop the project, to be ready for construction. Until a Feasibility Licence is secured, the project will not be able to commence a number of critical site investigation surveys, such as offshore wind/wave monitoring or geotechnical work. Some desktop and geophysical mapping surveys may commence in advance.
