05 Nov 2018: A pilot project at Luchterduinen wind farm will investigate underwater nature restoration at offshore wind farms. The project, run by the North Sea Foundation and the Natuur & Milieu organisation, Van Oord and Eneco, aims to show that nature conservation and sustainable energy generation can be mutually beneficial. Various types of artificial reef systems will be positioned within the wind farm late October by Van Oord. The artificial reefs will consist of “reef balls” and cages containing adult oysters These will produce larvae that will then contribute to the creation of a full-scale reef with all kinds of other species such as crabs, fish, and seals. Installation of 'reef balls' took place in early November. Van Oord deployed its installation vessel HAM 602. Until 2022, nature development within the wind farm will be scientifically investigated by Waardenburg Consultants, SAS Consultancy, and Wageningen Marine Research.
