02 May 2024: The Finnish government has decided to deny 16 applications for Economic Exploitation permits for offshore wind projects in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). An Economic Exploitation permit would represent site exclusivity and offer a land lease. The Finnish Government is undergoing a legal review of the EEZ laws, which currently are not designed for the construction of offshore wind projects. The draft of the new law will be sent for consultation at the end of May, with the law potentially entering into law Q4 2024. The current wording of the law allows the Finnish government to deny projects largely at its discretion, and has done this in order to delay the permits until after the new law has passed. This development does not mean that any project has been denied based on specific characteristics, and therefore none are currently failed proposals.
