Ørsted pushes back Skipjack completion date

Ørsted and Eversource’s
Skipjack offshore wind farm is to be located in the ocean waters north east of Ocean City, 19.5 miles away from the Maryland-Delaware border. It was originally expected to be completed by 2022, but the developers have decided to push back its commissioning date due to delays in the permitting process.

The company issued the following statement regarding the matter: "As the federal permitting timeline evolves, Ørsted is now receiving its federal Notice of Intent for the Skipjack Wind Farm later than originally anticipated. As a result, Ørsted has determined that moving Skipjack Wind Farm's anticipated completion date from late 2022 to the new target of the end of 2023 puts us in the strongest position possible to deliver a successful project. Ørsted remains firmly committed to working with our federal partners to complete Skipjack and provide clean, reliable offshore wind energy to 35,000 homes in the Delmarva region.

"We wish to thank our partners at the local, state, and federal level for their continued engagement. As public health safeguards are lifted in the Delmarva region, Ørsted looks forward to scheduling new opportunities for residents to learn about the immense economic and environmental benefits associated with the Skipjack Wind Farm and this new American industry."

The
Skipjack project is expected to provide renewable energy for up to 35,000 homes. Ørsted, with its development partner Eversource, secured the project as part of its acquisition of US based offshore wind developer Deepwater back in November 2018. Subject to final agreed and signed contracts and all required project approvals, Ørsted will deploy Haliade-X 12 MW wind turbines at the site.

Ørsted says it will spend at least 34% of the project’s total capital expenditure in Maryland, and contribute $6 million to the Maryland Offshore Wind Business Development Fund, which benefits the local economy. Ørsted has also pledged to invest $38 million in port and fabrication facilities to help establish Maryland as a regional hub for offshore wind construction. The project is to connect to the PJM grid in Delaware, via a newly constructed interconnection facility in Fenwick Island State Park.
