Ørsted looks to the future of Hornsea Three

Danish Developer Ørsted is hoping to reach Financial Close for the Hornsea Three offshore wind farm next year.

Hornsea Three will be located in the North Sea, approximately 121 km off the Norfolk coast and 160 km off the Yorkshire coast. Up to 231 offshore wind turbines will be built within a 696 km2 area.

The project was granted consent by the Secretary of State for the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy on 31st December 2020.

If Financial Close is secured as expected in 2022 the project may commence construction as early as 2023.

"We look forward to working and engaging closely with local communities and stakeholders as we develop our detailed plans for the delivery of Hornsea Three, which includes finalising technical design, selecting our supply chain partners and taking a final investment decision (FID)".
Commented Craig Harwood, Development Project Director.

Hornsea Three is eligible to enter the fourth Contracts for Difference (CfD) allocation round; the UK Government’s main mechanism for supporting new low-carbon electricity projects. CfD Round 4 is due to open in late 2021 and provide support for ‘up to 12 GW’ of all-renewable capacity, including a separate strike price for floating wind and a separate pot for offshore wind.

When commissioned the
Hornsea Three wind farm will be capable of generating at least 2,400 MW of green electricity, enough to meet the average daily needs of well over 2 million homes.
