"As Saudi Arabia is to oil, the UK is to wind" says Boris

By: Tom Russell 06/10/2020 Prime Minister's Office
The Prime Minister has set out new plans to Build Back Greener, making the UK the world leader in clean wind energy – creating jobs, slashing carbon emissions and boosting exports.

He stated "The UK Government has decided to become the world leader of low cost clean power generation, cheaper than coal, cheaper than gas, asdn we believe that in 10 years time Offshore Wind will be powering every home in the country with our target rising from 30 Gigawatt to 40 Gigawatt. You heard me right, your kettle, your washing machine, your cooker, your TV, your plug-in electric vehicle, the whole lot of them will get their juice cleanly and without guilt from the breezes that blow around our Island.

We will invest £160 million in ports and factories across the country to manufacture the next generation turbines, not only   to build fixed arrays in the sea we will build windmills floating on the sea enough to deliver 1Gigawatt of energy by 2030. That is 15 times floating windmill, 15 times as much as the rest of the world put together.  Far out in the deepest waters we will harvest the gusts and by upgrading infrastructure in such places as Teeside, Humber, Scotland and Wales we will increase our offshore wind capacity that is already the biggest in the world.
As Saudi Arabia is to Oil the UK is to Wind, a place of almost limitless resource but in the case of wind without the carbon emissions, without the damage to the environment.

Wind power ... would not pull the skin off a rice pudding

I remember how some people used to sneer at wind power 20 years ago, and say it would not pull the skin off a rice pudding. We they forget the history of this country. It was offshore wind that puffed the sails of Drake, Raleigh, and Nelson propelled this country to commercial greatness.
The investment in offshore wind alone will create 60,000 jobs in this country and help us get to net zero emissions by 2050.  Imagine that future with high skilled green collar jobs in wind, solar, nuclear, hydrogen and carbon capture and storage.

Mother nature has savaged us

Mother nature has savaged us with Covid, but with the help of basic natural phenomena we will build back and bounce back greener and this government will lead that green industrial revolution"

This new investment is expected to support the creation of around 2,000 construction jobs and enable the sector to support up to 60,000 jobs directly and indirectly by 2030 in ports, factories and the supply chains, manufacturing the next-generation of offshore wind turbines and delivering clean energy to the UK.

The Prime Minister has also set out further commitments to ensure that, within the decade, the UK will be at the forefront of the green industrial revolution as it accelerates its progress towards net zero emissions by 2050.

These include confirming offshore wind will produce more than enough electricity to power every home in the country by 2030, based on current electricity usage, boosting the government’s previous 30 GW target to 40 GW. Creating a new target for floating offshore wind to deliver 1GW of energy by 2030, which is over 15 times the current volumes worldwide. The Prime Minister has also set a target to support up to double the capacity of renewable energy in the next Contracts for Difference auction, which will open in late 2021.

Together with planned stringent requirements on supporting UK manufacturers in government-backed renewable technology projects, these measures will mean the industry can reach its target of 60% of offshore wind farm content coming from the UK.

These commitments are the first stage outlined as part of the Prime Minister’s ten-point plan for a green industrial revolution, which will be set out fully later this year. This is expected to include new targets and major investment into industries, innovation and infrastructure that will accelerate the UK’s path to net-zero by 2050.

Business and Energy Secretary Alok Sharma said: "The offshore wind sector is a major British success story, providing cheap, green electricity while supporting thousands of good-quality jobs.

"Powering every home in the country through offshore wind is hugely ambitious, but it’s exactly this kind of ambition which will mean we can build back greener and reach net zero emissions by 2050."

The government plans for renewable energy forms part of wider efforts to ensure the UK meets its legally binding target to reach net-zero emissions by 2050 and build back greener from coronavirus.

The UK is currently leading the world in offshore wind capacity, with over 10 GW commissioned and more than 15 GW past the construction consent milestone. In the last twelve months, a number of developments have seen the cost of offshore wind fall and government support behind the technology increase as its looks to cut carbon emissions. Earlier this year, the UK's target for installed offshore wind was raised to 40 GW by 2030.
