Bornholm suffers power outage after subsea cable trips

On Monday 10 October 2022 at 7:49 am, the Danish island Bornholm was hit by a power outage after a subsea cable between Denmark and Sweden tripped.

Initially thought to be an issue with the subsea cable itself, Danihs transmission system operator Energient has since revealed that a local defect on Bornholm caused the sea cable trip. Power was restored for all consumers before noon.

The 60 MW
Bornholm island interconnector comprises three 50 km XLPE cables, between Hasle substation (Denmark) and Borrby substation(Sweden). The 42 years old AC cable was fully commissioned in 1980 and has already reached its operational limit. The Bornholm interconnector has failed a number of times in the past due to multiple reasons, including anchor damage and technical issues.

The cable is located nearby the Nord Stream 2 pipeline which recently ruptured. Investigations have pointed to suspected sabotage with the pipeline tasked to transport gas from Russia to Germany.
