DEME and Penta-Ocean forge offshore wind alliance

Penta-Ocean Construction Co., Ltd., a Japanese marine contractor, and DEME Offshore, a Belgium based offshore marine engineering company, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU). It concerns cooperation for the construction of offshore wind farms in Japan.

As a first step, the two companies will start with the introduction and development of advanced technologies that are deemed useful and beneficial to the Japanese market. They hope to move onto the joint execution of offshore wind farm projects in Japan.

DEME Offshore is a subsidiary of the DEME Group, claims to have installed around 2,200 offshore wind turbines worldwide. The company owns a fleet of installation vessels, including seven offshore installation vessels equipped with cranes that have lifting capacities up to 1,500t. Its latest construction vessel, a floating heavy lift vessel called Orion, is equipped with a 5,000t crane. The company also operates a number of other specialised vessels for cable installation, wind farm maintenance and offshore services.

Penta-Ocean is one of Japan’s leading marine contractors active in both marine civil engineering works, civil infrastructure and building construction sectors. The company supported the design, construction and removal of a demonstration offshore wind power facility in the Hibikinada District of Kitakyushu Port (Fukuoka Prefecture). Penta-Ocean also owns the first Japanese offshore installation vessel, CP-8001, which is equipped with an 800t crane, and is currently building a second new vessel with a 1,600t crane.
