In connection with the establishment of its Bornholm energy Island project, Energinet has announced plans to carry out preparatory environmental studies on Zealand and on Bornholm.

Energinet plans to survey plant and animal life in water holes, lakes, bogs, meadows, stands, etc. on Zealand and on Bornholm. Energinet has just sent letters to landowners to tell them that they can soon be visited by biologists who want to make registrations of the state of nature on selected land registers. Their property is located in an area where underground cables or high voltage stations may need to be established.

The surveys are made to take account of nature, the environment and the surrounding area, and the mapping will also be an important part of the basis for the authority's approval of the Bornholm  energy Island project.

Initially, Energinet is investigating a larger area than will eventually be needed, and the final location will be determined later. The investigations will take place in the period from the end of March to October 2022.

The Bornholm energy Island project is being developed as a collection point for electricity from offshore wind turbines in the Baltic Sea. On the island, the alternating current electricity will be converted to direct current for long distance transmission to the mainland.

Energinet is also investigating a possible electricity connection to Zealand under an agreement for a possible connection to Germany. On Zealand, energinet plans to install underground cables and a new high-voltage substation that connects the power from Bornholm to the high-voltage network on Zealand.
