Havyard has secured its fifth design and build contract for a wind farm Service Opertations Vessel (SOV) from vessel operator ESVAGT. The vessel is to be delivered by February 2021 and will be operated on behalf of MHI Vestas at the Moray East offshore wind farm off the Scottish coast.

The 70m vessel is a Havyard 831 L SOV-design and according to Havyard, has been optimised to be able to transport personnel comfortably and efficiently from the vessel to the wind turbine in demanding weather conditions.

“It has been an exciting process to develop the concepts around the vessels, so they can give our technicians the optimal conditions to service the turbines whilst finding a balance to ensure a cost efficient vessel operation. With ESVAGT we have, over the years, developed a collaborative approach where no one is looking at the colour of the work wear, but everyone is working together to make our operation much more efficient and competitive”,
says Keld Kristensen, Marine Specialist, Marine Engineering and Offshore Logistics for MHI Vestas Offshore.

Moray East is a 950MW offshore wind project 22km from the coast of Scotland and is being developed by Moray Offshore Renewables Ltd (MORL), a consortium consisting of ENGIE, EDPR and Mitsubishi Corporation.

In 2017 the project won a contract for difference at competitive auction which set the price of power generated at £57.50/MWh. It is anticipated to generate enough energy to supply nearly 950,000 households from its scheduled commissioning in 2022.

ESVAGT and MHI Vestas have been working together since 2008. The Esvagt Mercator was delivered in 2017 and has been servicing Nobelwind and Belwind projects in Belgium. In August 2019, a newly built SOV will enter into a 15 year contract with MHI Vestas at the Deutsche Bucht wind farm in Germany.
