Eyes on Boris to deliver offshore wind promise

The offshore wind industry is looking to newly returned UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson to deliver on his election campaign pledge to boost offshore wind ambitions.

The UK is currently a world leader with regards to installed offshore wind capacity, with around 8.5 GW installed and over 3 GW in construction or post financial closure. The government's current target for offshore wind is currently 30 GW by 2030, and was set in an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2050.

In his pre-election campaign, Boris Johnson stated he would boost the UK’s offshore wind capacity ambition to 40 GW by 2030 and support floating offshore wind development if the Conservatives win the General Election.

Commenting on the outcome of the general election, RenewableUK’s CEO Hugh McNeal said: “We look forward to working with the new Government to grow the UK’s renewable energy sector and deliver on the commitments to 40GW of offshore wind by 2030 and developing floating wind projects. The rapid expansion of renewables, including low cost onshore wind and innovative tidal energy, is key to decarbonising our economy and will provide huge benefits for consumers and businesses across the UK."

In September 2019, the cost of offshore wind dropped around 30%, following the result of the UK government's latest Contracts for Difference (CfD) auction, which provides subsidy support for major renewable energy infrastructure projects. Projects are now being delivered for as low as £39.65/MWh. The successful projects included the
Doggerbank Creyke Beck A, Doggerbank Creyke Beck B, Doggerbank Teeside A, Forthwind,  Seagreen Phase 1 and Sofia offshore wind farms. The cumulative capacity of these awarded projects exceeds 5.4 GW.

Furthermore, the Crown Estate (TCE) announced plans this year to open up the potential for at least 7 GW of new seabed rights for offshore wind development in waters around England and Wales. TCE claims that Round 4 has the potential to meet the electricity needs of over six million homes. Round 4 was revealed following seven extension projects with a combined capacity of 2.85 GW progressing to the award of rights stage.
