First Subsea nets Neart na Gaoithe bounty

First Subsea (part of the First Tech Group, based in Aberdeen) has been awarded a major contract by DEME Group to provide a Cable Protection System for the inter-array cables at the Neart na Gaoithe offshore wind farm, located 12 miles off the coast of Fife in Scotland.

The cable protection system will be designed to protect the cable during installation and during the operating life span of the wind farm. First Subsea stated that this reduces cable fatigue at the point of entry into the wind turbine offshore structures.

“As a UK based company, we are delighted to be awarded this contract, 100% of our bought-out parts will be supplied by UK companies”
said John Shaw, Managing Director of First Subsea.

Once fully operational,
Neart na Gaoithe is expected to generate electricity for around 375,000 homes, or all domestic properties in a city the size of Edinburgh, and to displace 400,000 tons of CO2 annually. It was awarded a CfD by LCCC in February 2015, with a strike price of £114.39/MWh. Developer EDF Energy is in the process prepping the project for construction, with works expected to start in 2020 and the first commercial supply of electricity in 2023.
