Boskalis (Ndurance)The final phase of export cable lay operations for the Galloper offshore wind farm are underway on Sizewell Beach, UK. The cable will bring power ashore from the wind farm for integration into the national grid via an onshore substation in Sizewell.

Export cable lay is being carried out by VBMS using cable lay vessel Ndurance which has set sail from Holland and, subject to weather conditions and other factors, is scheduled to arrive off the coast of Sizewell around the 30th of April.

The vessel will setup on anchors approximately 300m from the Sizewell coast and it is anticipated to remain there for up to seven days, weather dependent, whilst the final cable is installed. The same vessel carried out similar works on the wind farm in September 2016.

Pre-assembly works on the 56 Siemens SWT-6.0-154 turbines destined for Galloper is underway at the pre-assembly yard in the Port of  Great Yarmouth. So far a total of five towers have been fully assembled.

innogy is leading the development and construction of the Galloper project on behalf of the its partners the UK Green Investment Bank, Siemens Financial Services, Sumitomo Corporation and Macquarie Capital. The project represents an investment potential of around £1.5 billion.

Components are expected to continue to arrive in  Great Yarmouth over the coming months with stevedoring activities being executed by Great Yarmouth Port operators Peel Ports.

Offshore installation of the turbines will commence during May and will be carried out by Swire Blue Ocean’s installation vessel Pacific Orca. It is anticipated that the vessel will install four of the turbines in each trip.

The project will have a capacity of 336MW and the electricity it generates will be sold through long-term power purchase agreements with off-takers across the UK. It is expected to meet the needs of approximately 336,000 households.

Commercial production is scheduled to commence in 2018 and is expected to provide clean energy for 25 years.
