In a significant milestone towards Belgium's ambitious renewable energy goals, the first of 23 massive concrete caissons, constructed by a consortium of DEME and Jan De Nul, is nearing completion. These colossal structures, each measuring 57 metres in length, 30 metres in width, and 30 metres in height, weighing a staggering 22,000 tons, are set to be transported offshore to form the outer walls of an artificial island.

Taking approximately three months to fabricate each caisson, the meticulous five stage production process spans about 20 days per phase. Stored until mid 2024, these caissons are slated for deployment to support the construction of the energy island, a groundbreaking endeavour set to revolutionise Belgium's energy landscape.
The energy island, utilising sand as its foundation, is slated for completion by late 2026. Once finalised, it will host crucial electrical infrastructure, with plans for installation tendering set for 2024.

A recent visit by a government delegation, including Prime Minister Alexander De Croo, Energy Minister Tinne Van der Straeten, and State Secretary for Economic Recovery and Strategic Investments Thomas Dermine, underscored Belgium's pioneering role and expertise in offshore wind energy. The delegation toured the impressive caisson construction site in Vlissingen, emphasising the strategic significance of Princess Elisabeth Island in facilitating Belgium's transition towards renewable energy sources.

This project, spearheaded by a Belgian consortium, symbolises a remarkable collaboration between industry and government, marking a crucial step forward in achieving sustainable energy objectives and positioning Belgium as a leader in offshore renewable energy technology.
