Kustvind AB opens its Swedish shallow water wind farm for consultation in the hope of providing much needed power to Skåne County.

The 500 MW Sydkustens Vind offshore wind project is located 8 to 15 km offshore outside the municipalities of Skurup and Trelleborg, and near Vattenfall's Kriegers Flak wind farm, and will feature 25-33 turbines with a total height of a maximum of 305 m. Two alternative corridors for locating cables for export of the produced electricity are currently being investigated.

The region is considered to have a deficit in electricity production in relation to electricity use. In Skåne, about 13 TWh of electricity is used every year, but production amounts to only 3 TWh. The sea area off Skåne's south coast has also been pointed out by the Swedish Energy Agency as an area of interest for offshore wind.

As part of the permitting process for the project, consultations will be held with authorities, stakeholders and the relevant public. Project developer Kustvind AB recently published its first consultation document. An initial delimitation consultation will be held with the County Administrative Board of Skåne County, other state authorities and the municipalities of Skurup and Trelleborg this spring (April-May) and a public consultation will follow in the summer. This first consultation phase  is being held ahead of the environmental studies. When the surveys have been completed another round of consultations will be conducted, in 2022.

In Spring 2020 Kustvind enlisted Magnora ASA  as a partner and financier to help accelerate the project. Magnora will gradually increase its ownership in the company up to 50% based on a detailed milestone plan.

Construction is due to start 2026-27 at the earliest and when operational the wind farm will have the potential to generate just over 2 TWh per year.
