Huisman to deliver two cranes for Cadeler X-class vessels

Huisman has been awarded a contract from COSCO Shipping (Qidong) Offshore Co., Ltd. for the design and construction of two >2,000mt Leg Encircling Cranes (LEC). The cranes will be installed on the two new build X-class vessels for Cadeler.

The identical Leg Encircling Cranes will each have a 155-metre long boom, capable of reaching 180.5m above deck. Optionally, the boom can be upgraded to 175m in order to increase the lifting height to 200.5m. With these cranes, Cadeler will be capable of installing offshore foundations and next generation wind turbines for its future offshore wind projects worldwide.

The scope of work for Huisman consists of the design, engineering and construction of the two LECs at its production facility in Zhangzhou, China. The cranes will be commissioned at COSCO’s shipyard in Qidong, China, where the X-class vessels will be built.

The new vessels will, upon completion, be among the largest in the industry. The first X-class vessel will be ready by Q3/2024 and has already been commissioned for its first project by Siemens Gamesa. It will transport and install 14 MW turbines for one largest offshore windf arms in the world – the 1.4 GW Sofia offshore wind power park in the North Sea, owned by RWE. The second vessel will follow in Q1/2025.

With a deck space of 5,600m2, a payload of over 17,600 tons and main crane capacity of more than 2,000 tons at 53 metres, the two new hybrid vessels will be able to transport and install seven complete 15 MW turbine sets per load or five sets of 20+ MW turbines.
