Marine invasive species have long posed a threat to global biodiversity, impacting ecosystems and causing economic and environmental challenges. The offshore wind industry, operating in sensitive marine environments, faces similar risks due to vessel movements and biofouling.

Recognizing this critical issue, the International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) has introduced a comprehensive guidance document, Mitigation of Marine Invasive Species: Biofouling and Ballast Water (IMCA ES002).

This guidance, featuring insights from industry leaders like DeepOcean, Fugro, TechnipFMC, SBM Offshore, and Global Maritime, aims to address the transmission of invasive species and promote best practices.

Mary Ntamark, Technical Adviser – Environmental Sustainability, highlighted the significance of this guidance, stating, "IMCA Members have a unique opportunity to positively impact oceanic biodiversity and minimize environmental harm caused by invasive species through proactive measures in biofouling and ballast water management."

Ntamark expressed gratitude to the Life Below Water workgroup for their contributions, emphasizing that the guidance doesn't just outline practical steps but enables the development of strategic approaches within companies.

The offshore wind industry, reliant on marine operations, can benefit significantly from these guidelines. With the guidance facilitating proactive measures, companies in this sector can mitigate their environmental impact, contributing to the preservation of marine ecosystems.

IMCA Members can access the guidance to incorporate these recommendations into their operational frameworks.
