Leading Light Wind submits offshore wind project bid in New Jersey

Leading Light Wind, the sole American-led project in the New York Bight, has submitted its offshore wind project bid to the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU). This bid aligns with New Jersey's goal of achieving 11 GW of offshore wind energy by 2040. The project aims to contribute up to 2,400 megawatts of clean energy, benefiting public health, job creation, energy independence, and economic development across the state.

Situated over 40 miles off the coast, Leading Light Wind's proposal can power around 1 million homes in New Jersey and help reduce over 4 million tons of carbon dioxide annually. The project is a partnership between Invenergy and energyRe, with a focus on improving turbine performance and operations.

The proposed project also includes supply chain and infrastructure investments, such as localizing wind turbine generator tower manufacturing, expanding monopile manufacturing facilities, and developing an operations and maintenance port. Additionally, a battery storage option is suggested to contribute to grid stability and meet energy storage targets.

Leading Light Wind emphasizes community benefits, workforce development, and inclusivity. The project's Memorandum of Understanding with New Jersey labor unions aims to prioritize union construction and promote diverse workforce hiring and training. The project also plans to allocate up to $150 million for a community benefits program, focusing on energy equity, small business support, and environmental initiatives.

This bid aligns with New Jersey's commitment to clean energy goals and collaboration with local organizations, institutions, and stakeholders. Leading Light Wind's comprehensive approach intends to ensure that the growth of offshore wind aligns with existing marine economies and resources while fostering a just and equitable clean energy transition.
