Danish shipping company MHO-Co has designed two hybrid catamarans with modern electric motors. According to the company, these new motors will save on weight, space, and emissions, benefitting both the fuel economy in the offshore wind industry and the environment. The 35-metre CTVs are also designed to serve environmentally friendly technologies beyond offshore wind.

The catamarans will be launched in Summer 2021, with Ørsted having contracted them to transport technicians and equipment to the
Hornsea Project Two offshore wind farm in the North Sea.

Designing and building hybrid CTVs is a huge step in the environmental direction, and I am proud that we at MHO-Co have found partners who share our vision for sustainable development in the offshore industry”, said Mik Henriksen, CEO and Founder of MHO-Co. “With these new vessels we still offer some of the largest and most reliable CTVs in the world, and they can be converted to future technologies.”

The vessels will each have a 110 m² fore deck and 15m² aft deck and fit 24 passengers. They will be equipped with Danfoss’ Editron PM-Electric motors. The new hybrid propulsion packages are designed so that the vessels can be adapted in the future to eco-friendly power generating methods such as hydrogen fuel cells.

Developing the vessels, MHO-Co partnered with Incat Crowther. Ed Dudson, Managing Director of Incat Crowther Europe, said: “MHO-Co always push the boundaries when it comes to new vessels in the Offshore Wind Industry. These new 35m vessels are no different. It’s great to be working with Mik and his team again on the latest project, which will really bring hybrid technology to the fore.”
