nCentric connects Norther substation

nCentric were recently requested to provide wireless access to the Norther wind farm's Offshore High Voltage Substation (OHVS). This was to enable the transmittance of certain parameters from the OHVS to onshore personnel whilst its was not connected to the grid but installed in the wind farm.

These parameters can come from the SCADA systems, giving technical information about the OHVS or certain alarms, in case they would occur. These signals are then connected to the nCentric nodes, which themselves are wirelessly connected to the nCentric’s 5G LTE and Mesh network offshore. This principle makes it possible to monitor the information onshore.

The nCentric’s solution combines multiple frequencies giving the Norther OHVS a fully redundant solution. In the event one system fails due to loss of line of sight, the other system will take over. Practically the OHVS will be online and monitored through the nCentric solution even though it is not yet connected to the grid.

The substation topside measures 32m length, 21m in height and weighs 1,300 tons. It was built at the ENGIE Fabricom's facility in Hoboken in consortium with Smulders and CG.

The €1.2bn Norther wind farm is being constructed 23km from the Belgian port of Zeebruges and is expected to be operational in 2019. It is owned by Elicio, Eneco & Diamond Generating Europe and is currently poised to be the largest project off the Belgian coast. The annual output of the wind farm is forecasted at 1.4 billion kWh, enough to supply 400,000 households.
