Matthias Haag has been appointed as Project Director of the Neart na Gaoithe offshore wind farm. The project is owned by EDF Renewables and is located off the coast of Scotland.

Matthias has previous experience in renewables and has worked on offshore wind projects holding senior positions at Shell Wind Energy and he also acted as CEO of the
Gemini wind farm in the Netherlands -600MW wind farm located in the Dutch area of the North Sea.

Matthias said: “I’m very excited to join the NNG team to deliver this milestone project for Scotland, and it is great to work for EDF Renewables which shows its continuous ambition and commitment to the country’s low carbon future. This wind farm will provide power for around 375,000 homes for decades to come!”

Neart na Gaoithe was awarded a Contract for Difference (CfD) by the Low Carbon Contracts Company in February 2015 with a strike price of £114.39/MWh.

The developers have recently submitted a revised design for the project which intends to 'take advantage of new developments in relation to offshore wind technology'.

The proposed number of turbines has been reduced from 125 to 56 with a hub height up to 140m and rotor diameter up to 152m. According to the developers 'the reduced scope of the project is likely to lead to a reduction in the associated potential environmental impacts when compared with the original consented project'.

The project recently overcame a
major hurdle winning the long running judicial battle with the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB). MPR are now free to progress towards financial close with work expected to start on the project in 2018 and the first commercial supply of electricity in 2021.
