NKT signs Lithuania-Sweden cable service agreement

NKT has signed a new service agreement for Lithuanian TSO Litgrid. The agreement will see NKT provide onshore and offshore repairs on the Lithuanian part of the NordBalt interconnector. NordBalt is a significant cable, connecting grids in Lithuania and Sweden.

The agreement is a three-year one, and adds to one NKT already has with Swedish operator Svenska Kraftnät, for the onshore Swedish part of the interconnector.

Axel Barnekow-Widmark, Executive Vice President and Head of Service & Installation at NKT, described “a demand for service agreements to minimize the downtime in case of unpredicted outages”, noting that contracts like this make the TSOs “well-prepared to quickly bring the included part of NordBalt back into operation with the combination of our skilled jointers, a guaranteed vessel mobilization time and a tailored preparedness plan”. Valdas Bancevièius, Acting Director of the Transmission Grid Department at Litgrid, agreed that the new agreement would “reduce the risk of prolonged outages and in turn benefit our consumers and businesses”.

Earlier this month, the 300 kV XLPE HVDC cable was briefly shut down, as 4C Offshore reported exclusively to subscribers. The shut-down was caused by a failure in control equipment on the Swedish side. The 453 km-long interconnector, which entered operations in 2016, also suffered a failure in June this year, again in Swedish ground.

Elsewhere, NKT recently announced service agreements with EirGrid, Elia, 50Hertz, and Nemo Link.
