OX2 Åland and Orkla Group form hydrogen collaboration

OX2 Åland and Orkla Group have entered into a collaboration agreement for the delivery of hydrogen from OX2's ongoing project to Orkla's factory at Haraldsby in Saltvik on Åland.

Orkla Group has over 100 factories globally and aims to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 60 percent by 2025, invest in fossil-free energy and halve food waste.

The hydrogen deliveries are planned to take place from OX2's planned Energy Park at Möckelö but also from additional
solar park projects. In the future it is also planned to deliver hydrogen generated by the
Noatun North and Noatun South offshore wind power projects through a hydrogen production plant in Långnäs (Mega Green Harbour).

"We have together established that there is great potential in the collaboration with the right natural upsides for
both parties, as well as for Åland as a society in the pursuit of becoming CO2 neutral by 2035. We are now entering the next phase of planning and look forward to be able to use our ongoing green energy projects to help local industry become greener. Orkla is a leading organization for a sustainable transition, they are now doing what others say they should do, which is the same philosophy we work according to,"
said Anders Wiklund, country manager OX2 Åland.

"It's really fun that there will be green locally produced hydrogen available on Åland. It helps us reach our ambitious climate goals and at the same time contribute to the green development of Åland. We see Orkla's factory in Haraldsby as a good first example of hydrogen's possibilities and will, after this pilot, review the possibilities of scaling this up at other Orkla factories in our large group," said Christer Söderström, factory manager Orkla Åland.

Euromekanik is the technical partner for the hydrogen project at OX2's planned solar parks on Åland. They have extensive experience from implementing this type of solutions on an industrial scale for large companies in the Nordics.

"Orkla's factory in Haraldsby is a good example of when new green technology can have a direct impact on the local green transition. We see a strong trend in this, but it's especially nice that Orkla is so aware and proactive in its thinking, which creates opportunities to really get started with the transition that hydrogen can bring," said Peter Rydebrink, CEO at Euromekanik.

The Energy Park is expected to be ready in 2024 with hydrogen production to commence in 2025 with gas deliveries between the park and the factory to take place that year.
