Pre-construction surveys underway for Greenlink

Pre-construction surveys are underway for the
Greenlink Interconnector between Ireland and the United Kingdom.

The survey works will be conducted by the Geo Ocean V, a multi-disciplined Offshore Survey Vessel with hybrid propulsion fitted for Geophysical and Geotechnical survey work. Works will be carried out between 4 august 2022 and 23 August 2022, subject to weather conditions.

The Greenlink project comprises a 200km subsea and onshore high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cable system, two converter stations, a tail station at Great Island in Wexford, Ireland, and onshore cable works in Wexford and Pembrokeshire, Wales. The project’s nominal capacity of 500MW is expected to provide power for around 380,000 homes. Project owner Partners Group reached financial close on the project back in March which  is considered of critical importance in Europe and has been awarded "Project of Common Interest" status by the European Commission.

The Greenlink interconnector project is the first privately-financed interconnector in Europe supported under the Cap and Floor regulatory regimes in the UK and Ireland and represents a total investment of over €500m. Greenlink is due for commissioning in 2024.

A consortium of Siemens Energy AG and Sumitomo Electric Industries Ltd have been awarded EPC contract for the Greenlink project. Sumitomo will be responsible for engineering, procurement, and construction of onshore and subsea high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cable systems, while Siemens will handle engineering, procurement, and construction of two converter stations, a tail station at Great Island in Wexford and onshore cable works in Wexford and Pembrokeshire, Wales. The contract also includes a service and maintenance contract for operations and maintenance following commissioning of the project. Work will begin at the start of 2022, following financial close.

Jan De Nul Group has been tasked to install the Interconnector between Ireland and the United Kingdom. Its scope includes two subsea HVDC cables and one fibre optic cable; these will link the two countries’ existing electric grids over a 160 km distance between County Wexford, Ireland and Pembrokeshire, Wales. The company will perform shoreside Horizontal Directional Drillings, starting later this year (2022).
