RMT calls for Ørsted workers to go on strike

According to a notice from The National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT), its members that are part of offshore wind developer Ørsted are being called to go on strike due to rates of pay and conditions of service.
Members are instructed not to book on for any shifts that commence between 00:01 hours on Friday 23rd September 2022 and 23:59 hours on Saturday 24th September 2022 and 00:01 hours on Friday 30th September 2022 and 23:59 hours on Saturday 1st October 2022.

Michael Lynch, RMT General Secretary, said: "Let’s hope that this action will focus management’s minds and get them back round the table to resolve this matter. You should be rewarded with a fair pay increase and genuine improvements to your terms and conditions. Management probably believe that you are not prepared to fight for pay justice, it is time to prove them wrong."

A spokesperson for Ørsted, said: “Following a ballot of its 96 members working in our offshore wind operations team, the RMT union has notified us of its intention for those members to conduct two 48 hour strikes over pay and conditions of service beginning 23rd September and 30th September. We have always committed to being a leading and caring employer, paying fair and competitive salaries to all our employees as part of our sector-leading employment agreements. We are conscious of the continuing inflationary pressures in the UK and have already committed to discussions with Prospect, with whom we have a formal Trade Union recognition agreement for negotiating terms and conditions of employment for Ørsted’s UK wind operations and maintenance staff.”

Ørsted recently put one of the largest offshore wind farms in the world, Hornsea 2, into operation. The project is located 89km off the Yorkshire Coast, alongside its sister project Hornsea 1, and is expected to help power over 1.4 million UK homes.

Hornsea 2 is comprises of 165 wind turbines, and has an overall capacity of 1.3 GW. Each turbine blade is 81m long and the blade tip reaches more than 200m above sea level. One revolution of the turbine blades can power an average UK home for 24 hours A total of 390km of subsea export cables take the power generated from Hornsea 2 to the shore at Horseshoe Point in Lincolnshire.

Ørsted currently has approximately 8.9 GW offshore wind in operation, approximately 2.2 GW under construction, and another almost 11 GW of awarded capacity under development including Hornsea 3.
