Skanska to upgrade South Brooklyn marine terminal for $612M

Skanska, a leading construction company, has finalised an agreement with SBMT Asset, LLC to upgrade the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal in New York City, USA. The project, valued at $612 million (approximately SEK 6.4 billion), marks a significant investment in the region's infrastructure.

The initiative aims to transform the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal into one of the largest dedicated offshore wind ports in the USA. It will play a crucial role in supporting the development of Empire Wind, a major offshore wind project led by Equinor, located 24 to 48 kilometres (15 to 30 miles) off the coast of New York.

Key components of the project include the demolition of existing structures, dredging of new and existing berths, bulkhead upgrades, and the installation of new wharf and dock facilities. Additionally, infrastructure improvements, construction of heavy lift crane pads, and the establishment of an offshore wind staging area are part of the plan. A new operations and maintenance building will also be constructed to support ongoing operations.

The total investment includes prior awards for early commitments and long lead items, amounting to $249 million (approximately SEK 2.6 billion). Pre construction activities commenced in January 2023, and construction activities covered by this latest award are expected to continue through 2026.
