Specialist Marine Consultants Ltd (SMC) has secured a contract to provide holistic Marine Coordination services to the
Formosa 2 offshore wind farm in Taiwan. The project represents SMC’s fifth Marine Coordination contract award in Taiwan and the company’s 40th globally.

As with the Formosa 1
Phase 2 project, SMC will work with SeaPlanner and local communications company, Mercury Data Systems, to deliver a marine coordination solution, comprising design, communications infrastructure, marine management software and service delivery throughout the duration of the construction phase.

SMC stated that it will be integrating Taiwanese nationals within the Marine Coordination team. Local personnel will work alongside SMC’s marine personnel, developing practical and theoretical skill sets and providing a point of liaison for local authorities and third parties.

SMC Taiwan Manager, Dean Coates, commented: “Taiwan remains a key area of focus for SMC and we are extremely pleased to be able to build upon our early success and lessons learned in the region. As a company, we are proud of our track record in developing personnel and indeed in training local people. We now have a strong pipeline of work established in Taiwan for the coming years and it’s fantastic that we’ve been able to recruit locally, delivering knowledge and expertise that can hopefully benefit the region and its people for many years”.

Phase 1 includes two Siemens 4 MW demonstration turbines, which were installed in 2016. Phase 2 saw the addition of a further 20 SWT-6.0-154 turbines, with a total output of 120 MW.

Formosa 1 is owned by Formosa I Wind Power Co. Ltd., a partnership of Ørsted A/S (35%), JERA (25%), Macquarie Capital (25%), and Swancor Renewable Energy Co. Ltd (15%). Phase 2 is expected to be operational by 2020, making it the first commercial-scale project in Taiwanese waters.
