Download now 4C's latest service vessel podcast, where John Kecsmar from Ad Hoc Marine Design discusses what a  SWATH vessel is, and its advantages and disadvantages.  John is a naval architect with many years of industry experience and well-known for his expertise in SWATH designs.

SWATH is a Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull. Vessels with this configuration has been used successfully in the offshore wind market, achieving safe transfers in high seas. However, there are some of the myths surrounding the vessels, which are possibly part of the reason that there still relatively low numbers operating in the sector.

There are currently 21 SWATH CTVs working in offshore wind, out of a total of over 440 active vessels (not including three vessels which have moved to other markets).

There is also just one SWATH SOV, Groene Wind,  in operation. However, this is set to change. Back in October this year, GC Rieber Shipping announced that it had contracted  the Cemre yard in Turkey to build two SWATH SOVs, the Windkeeper design.
