Visser & Smit Hanab secures cable contract for Dutch nearshore project

Visser & Smit Hanab have been awarded the contract by Van Oord Offshore Wind to perform all array cable terminations and testing work at Windpark Fryslân.

The wind turbines will be connected to the project's onshore high voltage substation via 33 kV inter array cables. Visser & Smit Hanab have been selected to carry out all termination and testing operations. The routing, termination and testing activities will commence as soon as the cable installation starts.

Gerard Lak, General Manager Offshore Wind, commented: “This will be our second project in a row with Van Oord and we are proud to have been selected based on the good cooperation between V&SH Offshore and Van Oord on the Borssele project. The termination and testing works of the array cables, fits perfectly within our field of expertise. As we're currently finalizing the installation of the Onshore export cable(s) for Windpark Fryslân as well.”

Located in the IJsselmeer, near Breezanddijk, Windpark Fryslân will be the world's largest wind farm to be built in an inland waterway. The project will feature 89 Siemens Gamesa SWT-DD-130 turbines, each with a 4.3 MW capacity and 180 metres high.

Once the project is built, Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy will be responsible for its maintenance and management for 16 years. With a capacity of 382.7 MW, Windpark Fryslân will provide sufficient energy for approximately 500,000 households. Eneco has signed a 15-year PPA for the 1,500 GWh/year wind farm. In their contract, Eneco and Windpark Fryslân have agreed that biggest energy consumers in the province of Fryslân will also have the option of purchasing sustainable energy from the wind farm.
