Middelgrunden Offshore Wind Farm

22 Mar 2021: Middelgrundens Vindmøllelaug I / S presented its annual newsletter in February 2021 and held a digital info meeting on 22nd March. Production in 2020 was 44,939,158 kWh. The price of electricity was very low in 2020, most of the year below 20 øre / kWh. This is due to the mild winter in 2019-2020, where there was abundant precipitation in the form of rain and therefore large reserves in the Norwegian and Swedish hydropower plants and the lower activity due to Covid-19. The two annual service inspections have been carried out by service company PMT. The annual check and update of the safety equipment was made. Check and service of nacelle cranes was carried out in December 2020. The turbines are approaching the end of the design lifespan. However, the turbines can continue to run if stricter monitoring of critical parts is carried out. In 2020, there have been no major individual repairs. But there have been many minor repairs due to worn parts or parts broken down due to age. Middelgrundens Vindmøllelaug I / S provided a breakdown of required works and the state of components: • A major overhaul of the pitch system has been made, where the brackets holding the pitch cylinders have been secured with an extra bolt. In addition, several pitch cylinders have been replaced and articulated bearings in the pitch cylinders have been replaced where this has been sufficient. • Wreckage of yaw gear and yaw motors remains a problem. The braking torque on the yaw motors is checked continuously and in all cases in connection with faults in the yaw system. • On turbine no. 13, a soft starter has now been installed as an experiment, which ensures that the engines start and stop softly. That it is expected that this will extend the life of the gear and motors. • Phase batteries are replaced regularly as before. A new type of phase batteries (round) is now used, which is significantly cheaper and easier to replace than those that were originally used. • Defects in electrical components such as: Switches, slip rings, power supplies, sensors, cables etc. causes many stops and service costs. Faults on slip rings and cables in the main shaft cause a lot of stops, and it is being considered whether it pays to switch to another type of slip rings. • Cables in the hub are clearly affected by the oily environment, ie. that the insulation and plugs are broken down with short circuits as a consequence fault. Work has started to replace all cables and connectors where they are most included. • Faults occur such as: Defective bearings in auxiliary motors, defective pumps, breakdown of hydraulics, faults in control circuit and the like. Overall turbine maintenance totalled 5,178,903 Kr. The concession for the utilization of wind energy on Middelgrunden expires in 2026. Factoring in the low electricity prices of recent years and the maintenance costs the project can be sustained but at little profit. The price of electricity is decisive for the return on production in future. SWECO estimates cost of decommissioning would be DKK 25-33 million. Provisions of DKK 24 million have been accumulated over the years for dismantling (or continuation of project). HOFOR has succeeded in obtaining public funds for an exciting renovation project on one of Middelgrunden's wind turbines. The project includes replacing the nacelle and blades of one turbine. The project is expected to be completed within 2 years. If successful a similar concept could be applied to the other turbines. Project owners hope that if repowered the wind farm would be operational for another 25 years.
