Sleipnir completes Hornsea 2 installation

Heerema’s semi-submersible construction vessel Sleipnir has completed its second project in the wind sector this season, having earlier executed the Hollandse Kust Zuid installation. The work included the transportation and installation of two jackets for Ørsted that will provide the foundation for the Hornsea 2 wind farm’s Reactive Compensation Substation (RCS) and Offshore Substation Platforms (OSS).

Sleipnir traveled to the OSS location on September 29 and installed the 5000 metric ton OSS jacket. It then proceeded to move into the shallow water RCS location where it installed the 1500 metric ton RCS jacket. The installation followed around two years of cooperation with Ørsted, the fabricator SMOE in Batam, and its transportation subcontractor Biglift. Heerema will be back to complete its scope at Hornsea 2 in 2021.

Hornsea Two will surpass its predecessor Hornsea One, by generating 1.4 GW of clean energy once complete in 2022. The project will span an offshore area of 462km² featuring 165 SG 8.0-167 DD turbines. It is expected to power well over 1.3 million homes in the UK with clean electricity.

Foundation installation is currently underway at the site. In total, 165 monopiles and transition pieces will be installed at sea in preparation for the site’s 8.4 MW turbines. With a height from sea level to blade tip of 204 metres, the turbines will also feature new 82 metre long blades, which are currently being fabricated at the Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy blade factory in Hull.
