Dutch announce new 2 GW offshore wind connection

The Dutch Minister of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy (ESK) has decided to tender for additional offshore wind capacity to be built by 2030 and has kicked off plans for a new 2 GW grid connection.

In 2020, it became apparent that 2030 the offshore wind roadmap for 11.5 GW will be insufficient to meet the government's operational target of 49 TWh by 2030.  In addition, the European targets for CO2 reduction are to be tightened, enabling the connection of extra offshore wind necessary.

A third HVDC connection within the IJmuiden Ver wind energy area is deemed necessary; IJmuiden Ver Gamma. The wind farms connected by IJmuiden Ver Gamma are expected to be defined under the North Sea Programme (2022-27) and commissioned by 2030 at the latest.

TenneT will build and operate a new offshore converter (66 kV HVAC to 525 kV HVDC) with a 2 GW capacity. A subsea cable will connect to an onshore converter (525 Kv HVDC to 380 kV HVAC) and an underground cable then connects to the HV station Amaliahaven on the Maasvlakte, which is yet to be built.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate (EZK) and TenneT TSO BV have published a Notification of intention and participation for IJmuiden Ver Gamma offshore grid connection. Organizations, companies, local residents and other stakeholders are invited to contribute ideas until Friday 21st May 2021.

IJmuiden Ver Beta grid connection. The Minister of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy selected a preferred alternative for IJmuiden Ver Beta in November 2020. The route will be investigated in more detail in a draft Memorandum on Scope and Detail (NRD) which will be published September 2021.

The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) will be prepared next year, and the final integration plan and permits and EIA are expected to be made irrevocable by mid-2024.
