Kongsberg Maritime secures Hywind Tampen contract

Kongsberg Maritime has announced that it will be supplying key positioning and monitoring equipment to Equinor’s
Hywind Tampen floating wind farm, as part of a contract with industrial solutions provider Wood PLC.

Kongsberg Maritime will deliver its DPS position reference system and Motion Reference Unit (MRU). The DPS exploits all available GNSS infrastructure to deliver continuously available, position information, and is suited to monitor the location of the turbines relative to the seabed. This will help to ensure positioning for each unit within the wind farm.

The MRU will check roll, pitch, yaw and heave motion, informing the blade trimming system to ensure that the turbine is not overloaded in strong winds and thus likely to become unstable. Marine traffic situational awareness and visibility to other vessels will be facilitated by the AIS AQ610 base station. All the KONGSBERG equipment permits remote access and monitoring.

Vidar Bjørkedal, Vice President Sales & Customer Support at Kongsberg Seatex AS, said: “We are delighted to be involved with this innovative project. Kongsberg Maritime’s offshore positioning portfolio leads the market, and it is a testament to the versatility of these existing technologies that they are being shown to be optimal for use in a range of diverse applications, including windfarms.”

The development of the 88 MW
Hywind Tampen array is designed to reduce emissions from oil and gas production at the Snorre and Gullfaks fields. It is to consist of 11 wind turbines, with a total capacity of 88 MW, installed approximately 140 km from shore, at water depths of 260 to 300 metres.

Operated from Equinor’s offices in Bergen,
Hywind Tampen is scheduled to enter operations at the end of 2022. It is expected to meet around 35% of the annual demand for electricity of the five platforms: Snorre A and B and Gullfaks A, B and C. In periods of strong winds, the percentage could be higher.
