Applications for development consent for the East Anglia ONE North and East Anglia TWO offshore wind farms have been granted by the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.

The East Anglia
ONE North application was for an offshore wind farm which could consist of up to 67 turbines, generators and associated infrastructure, with an installed capacity of up to 800MW, located 36km from Lowestoft and 42km from Southwold.

The East Anglia
TWO application was for an offshore wind farm which could consist of up to 75 turbines, generators and associated infrastructure, with an installed capacity of up to 900MW, located 37km from Lowestoft and 32km from Southwold.

The applications were submitted to the Planning Inspectorate for consideration by ScottishPower Renewables on behalf of East Anglia ONE North Limited and East Anglia Two Limited on 25 October 2019 and accepted for Examination on 22 November 2019.

Following Examinations during which the public, Statutory Consultees and Interested Parties were given the opportunity to give evidence to the Examining Authority, recommendations were made to the Secretary of State on 06 October 2021.

The Planning Inspectorate’s Chief Executive, Sarah Richards said: “The Planning Inspectorate has examined more than 100 nationally significant infrastructure projects since the Planning Act 2008 process was introduced, ensuring local communities have had the opportunity of being involved in the examination of projects that may affect them.

"These Examinations took place during the COVID-19 pandemic and its associated restrictions, and the Examining Authority worked hard to ensure that local people, the local authority and other Interested Parties were able to fully participate.

"The Examining Authority listened and gave full consideration to local views and the evidence gathered during the examination before making their recommendations.”

A ScottishPower spokesperson said: “Offshore wind is exactly what’s needed to get more clean, green home-grown electricity on to the grid, so we can reduce our dependency on gas and reach net zero.

“We note the Secretary of State’s decisions to consent the East Anglia ONE North and East Anglia TWO offshore windfarm projects, which were designed to support the UK’s green energy security and help turn the Government’s ambitions for offshore wind into reality.

“We’ll now fully assess what the detail of the decisions means in practice for our projects, our plans to generate enough affordable green electricity to power almost three million homes, and our ambition to support up to 7,000 jobs.”

Alongside East Anglia East
THREE, the two projects make up the ScottishPower Renewables East Anglia hub. The turbines from East Anglia ONE North, TWO and THREE that form the 3.1 GW East Anglia Hub will be among the world’s most powerful. East Anglia THREE has already secured consent. Subject to the outcome of the planning considerations, construction of the East Anglia Hub is expected to commence in 2023, with completion in 2026.

The installation of the East Anglia Hub will follow the
East Anglia ONE project which was put into operation in July 2020. Located 43 km off the coasts of Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth, the £2.5 billion East Anglia ONE project is owened by ScottishPower Renewables (60%), Macquarie’s Green Investment Group (20%), The Renewables Infrastructure Group Limited (14.3%) and InfraRed Capital Partners Limited (5.7%).
